About this deal

But when Penny and her widowed adoptive father Thomas spring a visit on Mika, things get complicated.

Mika, too, wants to meet but chooses to invent a more enviable version of herself, which means staging an elaborate and rickety deception involving a hunky boyfriend and ownership of an art gallery. I also really adored her friendships; Books with healthy friendships and good banter are so satisfying to read. However, in the last year, Caroline has passed away, and Penny has started to wonder about her birth mother.

I’ll be honest, with this book being focused on adoption, I wasn’t sure what I’d expect but what I got was a very well-thought-out, very emotional and enjoyable book. Hiromi was tough, her character was like a catalogue of stuff you hate but I love Mika’s take on her mom; every mother is a first timer for their first kid, and how their relationship grows toward the end was both devastating and uplifting to me. The effects it has on the child - not feeling that they know their history, and on the parents - the disappointment they feel knowing that they are unable to fully provide that. Unfortunately, Mika wants this to work so badly, she begins lying about parts of her life she wishes were better: her job, her living arrangements, her boyfriend and well.Mika has to come to the acceptance that people are who they are, they can't always be who you want or need them to be. It was about a month before Tokyo Ever After was published, and I needed to take some promotional photos for social media.
