About this deal

She always makes stellar use of flashbacks, but Glass Houses was more than that–we had to follow a weaving of events that weren’t chronological. Still on suspension, and frankly curious, Gamache accepts and soon learns that the other two executors are Myrna Landers, the bookseller from Three Pines, and a young builder.

The story begins when Gamache and Myrna, a neighbor in Three Pines, are designated as executors for the estate of a woman they’ve never met. We are told that “for reasons that baffled Gamache, he seemed the only person on earth who could not understand a word Billy Williams said. Ruth realizes Bertha Baumgartner was the woman they knew as the Baroness, a cleaning woman who used to own the Hadley house. Undoubtedly his most renowned work was 'The Great Impersonation' (1920), which was filmed three times, the last time as a strong piece of wartime propaganda in 1942. One of her secret fantasies had been that, as a girl who could code, she would work in the one place where a geeky fat girl could get dates. She was pretty sure that Damien didn’t believe in God—he had a stridently pro-evolution t-shirt that said EVOLUTION: How can 100 bazillion antibiotic resistant bacteria be wrong? Also, I thought the dialogue was a bit stiff in places and the interactions and conversations seemed a bit repetitive or rehashed from past stories. You'll meet a lot of regular characters again, although it's clear that for some big changes are afoot in the next book in the series. Books take us to places we’ve never been, they teach us about our world, and they help us to understand human experience. Jean-Guy presses Benedict about lying about his girlfriend, and Armand watches a video of Amelia on the street looking for David, sent to him from the agents watching her in Montreal.

He had been staying with the Gamaches while his truck was towed to get decent snow tires, which Gamache offered to pay for. I look forward to exploring your blog, reading your reviews, and hopefully finding many new books to add to my tbr stack! A cleaning woman with an estate that has no financial value, but a will that promises untold wealth. She wakes up the next morning hung over and with no memory of the night before except a vision of a young girl in a red tuque, and a name and number written in marker on her arm: David. Before they can read the will, however, the blizzard kicks up and they decide to leave before they’re trapped. Then he has lunch with Stephen Horowitz, who is Armand’s godfather but also happens to be Hugo Baumgartner’s boss. The Chief Superintendent of the Sûreté du Québec finds himself in a unique position: He's tangled up in the life of a recently deceased woman, and it doesn't involve her murder. Neither Gamache nor Myrna, nor the third person summoned to the farmhouse (a young construction worker) knew the Baroness, but her lawyer gives all three the bizarre news that they’ve all been designated as the executors of her will. He also wrote five novels under the pseudonymn Anthony Partridge and a volume of autobiography, 'The Pool of Memory' in 1939.

Kingdom of the Blind is an ingenious mystery that follows a thoughtful group of beloved characters navigating their way through a fallen world. No moment when DMS felt something out there in the void, talking to it, when DMS knew it was not alone. It’s extremely satisfying to tie up many of the loose ends after the shocking end of GLASS HOUSES but of course, there are as many threads left untied at the end of KINGDOM OF THE BLIND, including the prospect of Jean-Guy and Annie moving to Paris and Gamache no longer being the head of homicide at the Sûreté. This is a unique story about an African society on the brink of collapse yet, Tadjo envisions in her imaginary work, a new world where outrage and chaos generate hope and creativity.
