About this deal

This time it explores the very sensitive, current topic of homelessness in and around the gritty Los Angeles area. Why DMV bothers to record hair color has always mystified me and Melissande Gornick proved my point with a hot-pink, teased-up do.

Decades later, the program, under the tutelage of one of Jonathan's former students, continues to break ground. He is the author of two children’s books and numerous nonfiction works, including Savage Spawn: Reflections on Violent Children and With Strings Attached: The Art and Beauty of Vintage Guitars . Riveting and full of twists and turns that’ll keep you glued to the pages, I found this to be one of Kellerman’s best books to date…and that’s really saying something when you look at his extraordinary body of work. When Klement’s down-and-out models also start turning up dead, it looks like something very sinister is going on, as well as a chance for Kellerman to take an uncharacteristic detour into social commentary. He is also the author of two children’s books and numerous nonfiction works, including Savage Spawn: Reflections on Violent Children and With Strings Attached: The Art and Beauty of Vintage Guitars.

Alex and Milo zero in on the messy family as well as Donny’s “The Wishers Project” that brought strangers into Donny’s home. The success of that venture led to the establishment, in 1977 of the Psychosocial Program, Division of Oncology, the first comprehensive approach to the emotional aspects of pediatric cancer anywhere in the world. Comfortable with their idiosyncrasies as well as their strengths, it makes me curl up on the couch and settle in for a treat when I begin each new book.

I've enjoyed many of the Alex Delaware novels and while this was not my favorite it was a good, solid read. In the denouement – a noir-ish nighttime confrontation by the coast – Delaware needs to be saved by his police pals rather than the other way round, a re-balancing of the ledger that will doubtless be good for the character in the long run. Then new murders arise, and Alex and Milo begin peeling back layer after layer of intrigue and complexity, culminating in one of the deadliest threats they’ve ever faced. Sturgis, by contrast, is a comfort-eating, grouchy, workaholic, gay detective whose experiences haven’t stopped him from being a kind boss or a generous tipper. The victim had recently received rave media attention for his latest project: images of homeless people in their personal “dream” situations, elaborately costumed and enacting unfulfilled fantasies.
