I have bought much cheaper watercolours in the past, just for ‘doodling’, so I wanted to know what it felt like to use a more expensive collection. Choosing Keeping's own take on this traditional Japanese painting material, this selection of 20 colours has been put together especially for depicting springtime blossoms and other botanical forms. I began by swatching the watercolours and I was immediately struck by how easily my brushes could pick up this gel-like pigment. Some colors in the 36-color box already have white mixed in, same as designer’s gouache and cheap watercolors. They are designed to be used in a single layer on absorbent Japanese paper rather than in several layers. The extra chart is more helpful for deciding which color I want to use and how much water I’ll want to add to it.Matte Primary colours (CRIMSON, ULTRAMARINE, BRILLIANT YELLOW) with Neon equivalent (NEON RED, NEON BLUE, NEON YELLOW). I really enjoyed working with these paints and it was also an eye-opening experience using oriental brushes for the first time. The Green mix was slightly better, retaining the vibrancy of the green, producing a ‘minty’ green with a slight lustre. Neon Blue lacks ‘zing’ and is more like the ‘Prussian Blue’ in my Crawford and Black set, so I would rename it as such.
