About this deal

Although published in 2002, this book has such a gentle but intelligent tempo that it effectively drew me in to see through Alan Biggins eyes his amusing but eventful life as a budding estate agent in Normandy. Her self-portraits, which show her pain and grief, but also her passion for life and instinct for survival, have made her one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century. For those who don't yet know France themselves and want a little guidance about the place, the life and the trials of house purchase. However, a brutal suppression of the workers' rebellion demonstrated that frustration was still present.

I love this book, the authors sense of humour is superb, yet he is very firmly grounded in his writing, with funny anecdotes all the way through. There are many entertaining anecdotes, as well as lots of interesting inside information about French property; from where to find a bargain, to what are the pitfalls which can - and too often do - spoil 'The French Dream'.I find typical guidebooks a real turn off but this is written in a down to earth style and the author takes you right into the heart of french life. He later went on to open caricature concessions on Blackpool’s Central Pier and Pleasure Beach, in the Trafford Centre Mall in Manchester, and at Alton Towers.

This is an engaging tale of his trials and tribulations driving round the countryside trying to sell houses to the brits, richly accompanied by some interesting Normandy history and lots of local colour. And it is the France whose singular quality, whose unmistakable Frenchness, is captured not only through the photographer's subject and eye, but through his technique as well. Such revolutionary light effects and loose brushstrokes had a strong influence on the emerging style of Impressionism. In addition to reflecting revolutionary developments in tourism and transport, artists employed bright colour and loose linear structure to create an air of entertainment and recreation. France had also come into the final after several players missed training sessions due to illness over the past week, but Lloris refused to use that as an excuse.

In contrast, Jean-François Millet's The Peasant Family depicts rural farmers and idealises the French countryside. Lessons to be learnt (and not learnt)from the horse's mouth of an Englishman working for a French company selling houses to the English, explaining the pitfalls and recompenses of doing such a job.
