About this deal

Describes a book or dust jacket that does show some signs of wear on either the binding, dust jacket or pages. As in the title this book lives up to its name with delightful and evocative pieces written as only John Betjeman can.

The coffee’s not necessarily the best but the atmosphere is and it’s a good spot for an aperitivo amongst the arty locals.

John Betjeman began writing for the Telegraph in 1951 and continued to do so for a quarter of a century. Without these technologies, things like personalized recommendations, your account preferences, or localisation may not work correctly.

In architecture, grand Victorian edifices were pulled down to make way for gleaming brutalist monuments to the Future.GAVIN FULLER is head of the Telegraph library, responsible for maintaining that newspaper’s archive. I grew up in Venice (we moved there from NYC, quite a cultural shock) and it was the best place for a child to live. Quattro Leoni has its merits – I’ve never been in love with this place, it’s a little touristy despite the local feel of this piazza, but I have often taken visitors here and they have always loved it. A prolific journalist, poet and broadcaster, he became a national celebrity, famous for his passionate defence of Britain's Victorian heritage. I thought this would be an ideal present for my sister in law, but on receiving it the print was so small that it made it very diffficult for an older person to read.

Don’t forget to turn around and look at the view of Florence’s red rooftops and steeples or the countryside that seems to have suddenly creeped up on you. If you are fan of John Betjeman you will love this collection of his articles published in the Daily Telegraph.I raised the question with Better World Books and although they could not supply a hardcover version they were extremely generous in making up for the descepency. I find it’s so much more enjoyable and rewarding to get to know one small pocket at snail’s pace rather than run around like a madwoman on a mission all over a city!
