Of course, like pretty much every person, I adore her, and I think she’s just amazing, and I love her style and her voice. Song I Can’t Wait to Hear Live: “Night Moves” – featuring Lissie at her husky-voiced best in this perfect slice of Laurel Canyon-esque pop. After telling herself that she is free to feel whatever at any moment, the singer opens up about feeling sad again, asking herself more questions, trying again to find the tipping point, the big mistake, why it didn’t work out.t.” “Yellow Roses,” penned with (and sung with) Nashville ace Natalie Hemby, is a sweet, string-laced ballad that has the singer reemerging from her self-declared (and pandemic-enforced) isolation – “All day she climbed, peeked over the walls. Carving Canyons' is tinged with loneliness and heartbreak, due to Lissie experiencing a painful breakup during the pandemic. Lissie was “broken open,” to borrow the words she sings on the title track, and she spent time grieving, healing, and strengthening her relationships with friends. All the songs on this album were written by Lissie, but it has been endowed with a strong collective co-writing effort which included Madi Diaz, Morgan Nagler, and Natalie Hemby.

AH: Sometimes, though, there is that rush of hearing something new, or new to you, and it just does knock you out, and that’s great. It’s a bluesy number, and comes complete with echoing guitars that invoke the openness of the Lissie’s native American Midwest. I feel honored to make music, and it sounds cheesy, but you have to feel your feelings, and if I can help people feel deeply and cry or ruminate on something in their own life – I just think that process of feeling and release is the path toward peace in this world. Just when I feel there isn’t anything new to say about Lissie, she releases an album like Carving Canyons. Because I just felt, not only my breakup, but just the pain in the world and the isolation, seeing other people’s pain and politics – everything was just so, so intense.I actually ended up meeting a new person who I’ve been dating for over a year who’s amazing, and I really think, had there not been this downtime, we probably wouldn’t have been able to have a relationship, because it’s hard to date someone who’s never home! Americana Highways spoke to Lissie about the importance of acknowledging that pain, the wisdom in writing with other women, and what her own, personal Song of the Summer was. I’m gonna live my life like it’s slipping away” is how Lissie closes her last album: she now realizes what it means to live to the fullest and isn’t going to waste any more time worrying about not being perfect or hiding her feelings to herself.

The singer is angry at her past lover, she thinks about all the wrong things he did and she hopes he’s suffering only at the thought of her. Carving Canyons is deeply personal and has been described as “a sonic comfort as it simultaneously charts the ripples caused by heartbreak and loneliness as well as what happens when the soul perseveres amidst pain”. The woodlands and the tillable acreage, I’ve been doing a lot of conservancy, like getting goats to clean out invasives. The place she did it, however, was different – her very own farm in Iowa, accompanied mostly by her trusty pup – and it allowed her to heal both herself and the land scarred by generations of agriculture. The inspiration behind Lissie’s fifth album, Carving Canyons, was a double whammy: a break-up during the pandemic.Having worked for many years with producer Curt Schneider – who also has credits with Patty Griffin, Jeff Beck, and Alanis Morissette among others – Lissie knew she could trust him to help her deliver this vision again. Two years later we made the move to our present address, 35 The Headrow, where we have remained ever since.
